Diseases of the veins

Diseases of the leg veins cause both medical and cosmetic issues, and its widespread occurrence has contributed to the development of phlebology both worldwide and in Latvia.

Approximately one third of the population has chronic venous insufficiency. Varicose veins are one of the most common diseases, affecting 26% of women and 24% of men over the age of 36. A cosmetic issue (spider veins, superficial vein insufficiency, etc.) occurs in 90% of women and men.

TAKE CARE OF THE WELL-BEING AND VISUAL APPEARANCE OF YOUR LEGS

Damage to the superficial vein valves gradually causes varicose veins and swelling of the legs. Damage to deep veins (about 20% of cases) initially looks like swelling. Oedema (swelling of the leg) is prognostically a very serious sign, as it is the main cause of a trophic ulcer.

Thrombosis can also develop in the veins, which partially or completely blocks the blood flow. It is called thrombophlebitis in superficial veins, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in deep veins. Inflammation of superficial veins and thrombophlebitis are also characterised by redness and pain along the vein.

THE MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS OF VEIN DISEASE:

  • discomfort;
  • sensation of heaviness;
  • pain;
  • burning sensation in the lower legs;
  • cramps in the calf muscles at night (should not be confused with intermittent claudication if the artery is closed).

The increase in severity of symptoms is directly related to the CEAP (Clinical, Etiologic, Anatomical, Pathophysiological) classification.
